Featured Artist – Dead Man Winter

A contrast from Trampled By Turtles’s signature bluegrass sound, Dave Simonett’s side project, Dead Man Winter, has a down-home rock feel and keeps it connected to his Minnesota roots. Simonett is the frontman of Dead Man Winter, on vocals and guitar. Tim Saxhung, also from Trampled By Turtles, is on bass. Erik Koskinen is on guitar, Bryan Nichols is on piano, and J.T. Bates is on drums.

Their indie/alternative album Furnace was recorded live at the famed Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, MN, where In Utero by Nirvana, Simonett’s first favorite band, came into existence. Furnace is inspired by Simonett’s separation and divorce. He isolated himself in a Minnesota cabin in the dead of winter, which he calls his “most creative time,” and wrote the songs that helped him mourn and heal. The band’s last album Bright Lights is more rock n’ roll.

Dead Man Winter’s deeply American sound on Furnace is reminiscent of Band of Horses with a touch of Mumford & Sons. The songs are melancholy, but they’re not downers. Some of our favorites include “Destroyer,” “Red Wing Blue Wing,” and “The Same Town.”

Dead Man Winter shares Furnace with The Broadberry on Wednesday, May 24 as part of the Furnace Tour. War Machine and VILLAGES will be here to warm up the crowd. Check out Dead Man Winter on iTunes and Spotify if you aren’t already accommodated. Tickets are $16 in advance, $18 day of show. Doors open at 7 P.M., and the show starts at 8 P.M. See you there!
