Formed in Richmond’s underground music scene, Butcher Brown consists of Marcus Tenney on horns, Morgan Burrs on guitar, Corey Fonville on drums, Andrew Randazzo on bass, and DJ Harrison handling production and sound engineering. Together they form what Style Weekly’s Peter McElhinney described as “as close as Richmond comes to a supergroup”. Described as “garage punk jazz funk on the low end of the dial” on their own pages, the group has resonated with young and old fans alike. Their relative youth puts them at center stage for young jazz enthusiasts, but their possession of “old souls” makes them a favorite of those who grew up in a time where jazz was the centerpiece of musical culture. The group has collaborated with plenty of other notable figures in today’s jazz and funk scenes, such as Nicholas Payton, Nigel Hall, Dionne Farris, and Christian Scott. Former member Keith Askey, who recorded Too Much Guitar with DJ Harrison and Andrew Randazzo as the Keith Askey Trio, even collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on “i” off of To Pimp a Butterfly. In their second time playing The Shack Up since the it’s first year in 2015, Butcher Brown is featured in the lineup for The Shack Up’s first day on Friday, September 14th at the Broadberry. Also playing that day are New Yorkers Wild Adriatic and fellow Richmonders Weekend Plans.
