The Hackensaw Boys
The Hackensaw Boys
With feet firmly planted in the old-time song tradition, hands soiled by the dirt of rock n' roll and eyes fixed steadily on the future of real country music, the Hackensaw Boys are among the most exciting groups charting new territory in today's diverse Americana music scene.
How does it work?
Everybody sings a bit of lead, everybody sings a bit of harmony and most members know when to shut up. Instrumentation includes banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica, upright bass, charismo (a home-made tin can contraption) and the occasional trap kit.
Where do they come from?
In the beginning they all lived in Charlottesville, VA, but now the members are spread throughout Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Louisiana. For more than a decade, however, they've come together to tour the United States, Europe and the U.K. and to record several critically acclaimed albums.
Sarah White
Sarah White
Award-winning singer-songwriter Sarah White might resemble some kind of Hazel Dickens/Patti Smith/Cat Power love child. She's released records on Jagjaguwar and won Best Song at the 2007 Mountain Stage NewSong Contest. Her 2006 album White Light became a cult favorite for its eclectic blend of driving folk-rock, sorrowful country ballads and experimental, personal narrative songs -- the trifecta that defines her lengthening body of work. These days Sarah performs solo or with her band the Pearls, a dynamic trio featuring Charlie Bell on bass (Hackensaw Boys, Charlie Louvin) and Aaron Binder on drums. Sarah has shared the stage with Merle Haggard, Justin Townes Earle, Earl Scruggs, Will Oldham, Dave Matthews Band Caravan and was named 2013 Best Songwriter in her hometown of Charlottesville, the town invented by Thomas Jefferson.
